Rackspace (RAX) has already said it's trying to differentiate its OpenStack cloud infrastructure services from Amazon Web Services' (AWS) cheaper offerings via performance and customer service. With the upcoming arrival of Rackspace's Hadoop big data service, user control can be added to that list: Rackspace boasts its service offers system-level control AWS is unwilling to provide. Many Amazon (AMZN) rivals have criticized AWS' "proprietary" architecture, but that hasn't done much to stop its growth.

RAX continues to excel in the fanatical support to customers. Custom control and outstanding service will eventually win out.

People who look only at price must include the other intangiables. If they don't, they will soon realize they made the wrong decision. This negative word will spread and people will look for the better overall product.
