A Google Maps (GOOG -1.5%) app for the iOS App Store should be ready by year's end, sources tell The Guardian, but Google is reportedly "not optimistic" Apple (AAPL) will ever approve it. As evidence, they note none of the mapping alternatives recommended by Apple in the App Store make use of Google Maps APIs. But the widespread criticism and mockery directed at iOS 6 Maps gives Apple plenty of incentive to sign off on the app.

Does it matter? Only a few % of users are likely to move to an alternate mapping app when the base one is working well. The 1-2% who have trouble with the maps and a few others will switch, but the majority will stay on Apple's maps.

I have yet to find a single iphone user who _wouldn't_ switch back. There's momentum to the user experience and crowd sourced detail of Goog maps that will be very difficult to unseat. That said, my experience is that users could live with the AAPL maps, but given the ridiculous ease of getting the tried and true back (assuming it's in the store), it's likely 2/3 of users will quickly go back to Goog.
