With Oracle now legally required to keep supporting it, Intel (INTC) has announced a refresh for its Itanium high-end server CPU line, whose market share is a small fraction of the Xeon line. The Itanium 9500 (code-named Poulson) promises over 2x the performance of its predecessor, and delivers new features meant to improve reliability. Intel also promises its next Itanium chip will allow Xeon and Itanium servers to be built using common parts. H-P (HPQ), by far the biggest supporter of "Itanic," has introduced new servers.
