Xilinx (XLNX) will exclusively use TSMC (TSM) to manufacture its next-gen Virtex-8 FPGAs, Taiwan's Commercial Times reports. That would be something of a coup for TSMC, since Xilinx has relied on both TSMC and Samsung to make Virtex-7 chips. The Virtex-8 will leverage TSMC's 20nm manufacturing process, for which TSMC plans to start mass-production in early 2014. Xilinx claims its 20nm chips will deliver twice the performance and consume half as much power as 20nm parts.
