Last week’s fire and small oil spill at a rig in the Gulf of Mexico sparked fears - apparently unfounded - of a repeat of the Deepwater Horizon environmental disaster, but a catastrophe could be unfolding at the Niger Delta, where a leaky Exxon Mobil (XOM) pipeline has sent an oil slick 20 miles along the coast. Shell also has seen many problems in Nigeria, from spills to theft.

Exxon's pipeline has now been leaking for a week and its cause is still known.

Now that a precedent on fines is set with ALL company accidents regardless of location and nationality of companies involved (from the US Govt / press and its GoM incident) we will know doubt be able to follow this closely through the worlds media and assume the same level of scruitny and fines will follow here.
