Taiwanese foundry UMC has named Po-Wen Yen, formerly the head of its 12-inch (300mm) wafer ops, its new CEO. He replaces Shih-Wen Sun, who is being kicked upstairs to the role of vice chairman. UMC suggests Yen's background will be of value as the company goes through with a big expansion of a 300mm fab. UMC's sales growth has been trailing that of bigger rival TSMC (TSM) for some time, as TSMC grabs a larger share of order for cutting-edge mobile chips.
