Microsoft (MSFT) is building a cheap Xbox set-top box to go with its next-gen console and (rumored) Xbox tablet, multiple sources tell The Verge. Eurogamer provided a very similar rumor a year ago. The set-top will reportedly support casual games and would be a natural fit for Xbox Live, which has morphed into a very popular home entertainment platform. Microsoft is also said to be exploring bringing Xbox Live functionality to phones and TV sets.

Just another innovative step that will be swept under the rug cause the device doesn't have a piece of fruit with a bite out of it on the outside.

Leveraging Xbox and Live to rule the living room.

The set-top box will only be successful if live is not a requirement for basics like Netflix and Hulu that don't need an additional subscription fee. If so why bother. Just go with your cable provider's set top box. I like xbox but get a clue Microsoft! XB Live value for non-gamers/enterainment value is if they can share the experience with another XBL subscriber (i.e. watching Netflix/Hulu/select movies together). Otherwise this is just another failure. How much more, the world is in a recession. No traction if XBL follows current subscription structure.
