Attempts by Facebook (FB), Google (GOOG) and other Web sites to boost their mobile revenues could be hit by a new app for Android called AdBlock Plus, which is due to be launched tomorrow by German firm Eyeo. As the name suggests, the app blocks pop-up and display ads on Web sites, and commercials that precede videos such as on YouTube.

    There are lots of apps that I could probably use to make life easier, but I'm highly unlikely to use them. For those who are bothered by ads this seems like a good solution, however, a vast majority of people couldn't be bothered due to previous conditioning of keeping informed through advertisements. Look at magazines and newspapers and going to the movies for that 30 minutes blitz of clips--they are just a marketing mediums and I enjoy looking at all those pictures (except for that old media--newspapers (maybe Sunday, or WSJ Saturdays, excepted). What's going to be different when these companies get sophisticated enough to lead me by the nose to find what I like? This will not be a killer app for FB or GOOG.

    I think a lot of people would pay for an ad blocking app.


    On a cellphone they're very annoying because they take up so much space on whatever you're currently using, that you have to take the time to close it before you can move on (or back to) whatever you were trying to do in the first place.


    It'll be popular, and a real problem to ad revenue companies

    It isn't making a serious hit in web sales from traditional platforms, AFAICT, and AdBlock has been there (for free) for years.


    Some will implement it - the most tech-savvy. Those are the types least likely to follow an online click-ad anyway, I suspect. So, very little impact.

    I agree with Gary.. Think this could be used widely if promoted so most are aware. Major Pain in the XXX to have to wait for those ads to run. IMO

    As I predicted! Personally I don't even notice ads, other than the fact that they slow down the page loading (very annoying) so I'd go for this, but by the time I get a mobile device, I've little doubt that there'll be free versions available ( being a good place to start looking) so I don't foresee Google buying the company (but individuals might do well to buy shares...).

    You're correct that you don't notice them (nor are they intrusive) on a bigger screen such as a laptop or tablet.


    But they're a major PITA on a cellphone, because because on such a small screen and ad blocks out what you're trying to do in the first place. And that my friend is not just annoying, it's frustrating
