Google (GOOG) is buying ICOA, a top provider of Wi-Fi infrastructure services for U.S. ISPs and venue owners, for $400M. ICOA is the latest evidence of Google's growing service provider ambitions: the company is already partnering with Boingo (WIFI) to offer ad-supported Wi-Fi to Android users at thousands of U.S. hotspots, and has begun offering fiber Internet and TV services in Kansas City. Look for Google to push ad-supported services to ICOA's extensive network of "high-traffic public locations." Update: Google and ICOA deny the acquisition occurred. The PR announcing the deal was a hoax.
