Sony (SNE) has been approached by i-banks looking to sell its battery ops, "banking sources" tell Reuters. Selling the business, which employs 2.7K people, had 2011 sales of $1.74B, and has seen volumes decline sharply in the face of tough competition, would both help Sony raise needed cash and bolster CEO Kazuo Hirai's efforts to create a leaner, more focused company. However, the Japanese government might object to a sale to an overseas firm.
