With the 2014 introduction of its Broadwell CPUs, Intel (INTC) plans to change the packaging of its desktop CPUs so as to prevent users and motherboard makers from swapping them off a board, claim sources at multiple OEMs. This won't go over well with enthusiasts, but as ZDNet observes, it would please OEMs by lowering assembly costs and killing off aftermarket upgrade sales. It would also give Intel more control over the motherboard market, where it both competes and supplies third parties.
