TechCrunch backs up this week's GigaOm report (I, II) about VMware (VMW) combining three non-core businesses servicing Web/cloud app developers with EMC's Greenplum database and analytics hardware/software arm, whose products are often used in big data projects. Like GigaOm, TechCrunch claims ex-VMware CEO Paul Maritz will head the new unit, while adding about 1K VMware employees will be working for him. An announcement is expected next week.

Is there any money or stock involved in this move or is this like moving the kids and stepkids to the basement so that mom and dad can get down to business?
