Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti plans to resign after Silvio Berlusconi's PDL party pulled its support for the technocrat government and and the former PM said he would run for office again next year. Monti will try to pass a budget and financial stability law before stepping down. Italians are due to go to the polls by April at the latest, but elections are now likely to be brought forward.
