The ASN, France's nuclear safety agency, says the situation at the Fukushima plant now rates a 6 on the international scale of nuclear accidents. Three Mile Island was a 5 and Chernobyl was the only time the maximum of 7 has ever been hit. "We are clearly in a catastrophe," says the group's president.

If Japan's own prime minister cannot get up to date information about exactly what is happening, I have serious doubts that ASN can. Experts say this should not be a Chernobyl. There are more reactors involved than in the Three Mile Island disaster. However, it is not clear that the ultimate outcome will be much worse. The situation is bad enough to take all reasonable precautions. However, only time will tell how bad it really becomes.

    DW,

It's not about the Japan PM "not" getting the data, it's about the Japan PM releasing the data he has. This is a real bad situation.

Leave it to the French to provide calm words during a crisis.

He was later quoted as saying (in French of course) "We will certainly need many millions of Francs to properly study this situation--next week we meet in Rio for an international conference."

    Tony Petroski: That is funny.

Maybe I could get them to invite me. The beaches are probably nice this time of year.
