Japan's nuclear crisis has amounted to a radiation increase equal to a prolonged dental x-ray, James Altucher says, and the media owes everyone an apology for overhyping it. Equally, the media should apologize for overhyping and then ignoring many recent events, including the Greek debt crisis, which is now worse than ever.

    James Altucher:

Look on the bright side scamers made lot of money selling fake iodine pills. GDP will go up little bit because of that. I agree with you completly. People in Japan were not scared but we in the US were more scared. Cool head always prevails.

Congrats on winning the "Biggest Idiot Comment" of the month Tigersam.

I've been in constant communication with US responder friends in Japan, and can tell you very many Japanese are scared shitless.

Apparently, TEPCO requested their employees evacuate their facilities on more than one occasion due to this "prolonged dental x-ray." On other occasions those flooding the nuke pools had to back off due to this "prolonged dental x-ray". The facts are even a "prolonged dental x-ray" could kill you if its prolonged enough.

Posted about this before. See links below.

Link to radiation dose diagram that tries to put things in perspective.
    xkcd.com/radiation/

    Current status of damaged reactor.
    www.jaif.or.jp/english/

Using the two links we come up with the reactor radiation level at the worst location (north utility building) at the plant is the equivalent of ............a mammogram screening. (But not quite at the level of a chest X-ray.)

Altucher is in for a longggggg wait to hear modern day "journalists" apologize for their excesses and failings on anything. They've already moved on to their next target by now.

Someone please forcibly relocate this idiot journalist to Fukushima, although I do agree that the Euro debt crisis and continued declines in US real estate are being unjustifiably ignored

The Media dispenses propaganda not news. The only time they apologize is when they are right, which is not very often.Sort of like Bernanke.

James Altucher: Really, why don't you stand there and fight the nuclear fire yourself. If it is only Chest X-rays radiation then you can prove to be a Hero. Thanks to the journalists continue covering the event. They have exposed the flawed system with Tepco.
In a month or longer, some people may develop light radiation sickness. Any abnormality of the cells will mutate further.
"prolonged dental x-ray." How long is prolonged? Over a week, 2 weeks and longer. I don't recall having my dentist give me a X-ray shot longer than 1 split second / shot.

funny, my dentist throws a lead jacket over my chest/neck during x-rays. I don't see many ppl over in Japan rocking those. Fact is, there is a helluvalot of radioactive material at Fukashima. 7k tons of spent rods. 285 tons of active rods. And they're attempting to cool it with what normal folk would fight a forest fire with. They're in desperation mode. Anything to the contrary isn't the truth.

    Do your own due diligence.
Because all the data and analogy is about as reliable as a Bear Stearns, Lehman, or Citigroup 10K, Combined.

    Trust, but verify.

I don't think Altucher is concerned with journalistic diligence or scientific fact. Anything that tarnishes his uber bullish forecast is what he is trying to counter and foil.

I wouldn't worry about current radiation levels. The only thing relevant here is the chance of a meltdown severe enough to raise radiation to harmful levels.

Maxwell Ponte. Please say this in front of the innocent Japanese people, Americans and others who live near the plant. Repeat your own words in front of them.
"I Maxwell Ponte, wouldn't worry about current radiation levels."
Lets see how they will react toward you. Have a heart, when you say these sort of hurtful things!

The Media does have a vested interest in dramatizing these events, as that brings in more viewers. They go from one horror story to the next.

There's a lot of outright falsehoods above. The big one for the thyroid is radioactive iodine. The body tends to send much of the iodine it takes in to the thyroid. This means that almost all of the minute amounts of radioactive iodine you take in will make their way to your thyroid -- effectively concentrating the radioactive material in your body. There is a possibility of substantial damage due to this. The radioactive iodine can be washed out of your thyroid to a large degree by ingesting a lot of non radioactive iodine, which will also make its was to your thyroid. A friend once managed to poison himself with radioactive iodine. He used this therapy. He was very scared, but he seemed to recover okay.

Cesium is known to be toxic internally for reasons other than just radiation. It can cause things like tachycardia. You want to avoid ingesting this if at all possible.

Dental X-rays are considered to be a "lower energy" version of gamma radiation. If you aren't exposed to much cesium (a gamma radiation emitter), there's not likely much difference (presuming the cesium stays outside your body).

Basically you want to avoid ingesting radioactive material or exposing your skin, etc. to it. Eating food grown in Fukushima could be dangerous. If radiation dust escapes in steam or explosions, that could do damage to people exposed to it. However, it is important to remember the dilutive factor of air, etc. If you were near the plant, it could be a problem. The farther away you get, the less likely it is that the concentration will be enough to bother you. If you put high concentration hydrochloric acid on your skin, it would burn it badly. If you diluted it 1 million times, it likely would not cause much damage. The same principle applies.

Thanks David for a detail explanation. For some, your explanation works very well but for a few, it takes actual suffering in order to feel the pain.
I don't know why James Altucher will bring up such a senseless/heartless topic to talk about. He is even equating the Greek debt is worse than the radiation sufferings in Japan. Unbelievable stuff!

The news business is a for profit business. Do you really expect the truth? People capitalizing on the misfortunes of others; that is the only truth.
