While Syria is not a significant oil producer it borders on Turkey, Iraq and Iran and shares with each of them an interest in a significant domestic Kurdish minority. Instability in Syria will cause increased anxiety in these neighbours (and in Israel) and tensions amongst all these neighbours could increase accordingly.

Domestic tensions within Syria focus on (a) the brutality of its Ba'ath Socialist Government, (b) the fact that this government is based largely on the Alawis Islamic minority and (c) the many years of poor economic development.

Hopefully it won't be 'Death with Dignity Friday'.
