Regulators should block AT&T’s (T) planned takeover of T-Mobile (DTEGY.PK), FT's John Gapper writes. The U.S. already performs badly in fixed-line broadband services in terms of price and speed compared with other countries, and unless they're stopped, Verizon (VZ) and AT&T are on their way to replicating in mobile the power they exert in fixed-line, Gapper says.

Before our "always means well Government" broke up At&T, the United States had the best phone service on the Planet. This is the same Government that forced banks to loan money to people that had no business borrowing money, (housing implosion) also the same Government that has done such a great job bringing Detroit back, the more the Government does the further Detroit slides into third world status. Wake up, the break up of AT & T was another very stupid government intervention into the capital markets that is slowly fixing its self, GOVERNMENT stay the hell out the capital markets natural development towards efficiency.....

Europe has dozens of carriers, has a far more competitive market, and better speeds and networks, but if I remember right their prices aren't necessarily better than ours.

Internationally, the motherland of broadband is far behind Asian and European nations in terms of speed and robustness of networks though, with the gov't propelled broadband expansion in S Korea bringing broadband to a significantly larger percentage of the population and at better speeds than we have here.

Just like old time. There was no competion and I used to pay $10 monthly for my phone bills. Now a days it buys me only coffe at star bucks. No, no I am wrong I did not calculate tax. Make that $11.

Remember when you are monoloy you are very careful because 1000 agencies watch you and you make always right decisions.

By the way my phone bill is over $200 now.
