Bank deposits rose 8.7% this year to $9.17T according to the Federal Reserve, outpacing a 3.7% gain in loans, and leaving the deposit level standing a record $2T above loans. Four years ago - it was $205B. The industry is lending $0.78 for every $1 in deposits, well below the mid-90 level described as optimal by Wells Fargo chief John Stumpf.
