Google Music (GOOG), hardly a stranger to imitating iTunes, is now introducing an iTunes Match clone. But there's a big difference: iTunes Match goes for $25/year, whereas Google's service, which scans a user's collection and makes copies of recognized tracks available in the cloud, is completely free. Sources tell AllThingsD Google is writing "big up-front checks" to music labels for the service, which might help Google Music step out a bit from iTunes' huge shadow.

The big difference is Google Play is streaming only. iTunes Match I can download my music anytime I want (and even in higher quality if I available).

If you are ok with streaming everything, maybe this is a neat deal, but it's not the same service iTunes Match does. (I haven't checked out Amazon's player).

I spoke too soon, it appears you can DL your stuff later. Very nice.

A fantastic development. I'm uploading my entire music collection (currently stored on itunes) right now. I've been an Apple fan since the early 80s (first computer was an Apple 2; bought a Mac SE as a sophomore in college; never owned a computer that wasn't from Apple in my life; bought who knows how many ipods, first generation ipad owner, etc.) but there is no denying Google is eating Apple's lunch right now. My next computer is going to be a Chromebook.

This is good news. I recently allowed my iTunes Match account to lapse since Apple had already upgraded all my music to 256kbps (Thank you Apple!) and they don't allow streaming to my Droid.

Google Play streams nicely to my Droid and even caches played tracks locally so they don't need to be streamed a second time. Adding the Match functionality is nice, I'll use it.

PS. Does anyone else hate the new iTunes interface?
Bleh! I've always liked iTunes for local music library management, but I really hate the new interface. It's not as bad as the Ribbon bar Microsoft used to replace our beloved menus in our Office applications, but it's a contender!
