This very cool interactive from ETFdb shows the makeup and market caps of the top 10 S&P 500 components each year since 1980. Essentially a proxy for oil/oil services in 1980, the list was tech-heavy by 1999 (AOL made it). Forgetting Apple, the last decade is notable for the rise then fall of financial stocks, and the reemergence of pharmaceutical names.
