A bill introduced in Congress would have the government purchase and stockpile rare earths, making the metals available to Defense Department contractors. Roughly 5% of world rare earth use is for U.S. military purposes. MCP +5.5%, REE +9.0%, SHZ +4.7%, REMX +0.7%.

  • Talk about suggesting something 'after the fact'!
Now that rare earths are priced at historic highs, NOW they want to use our tax money to buy them???
No wonder we have such a huge deficit, with such idiotic proposals!
Better look over the bill carefully ... probably a provision in there to purchase 1 million full-size, gas-guzzling SUV's from GM to transport these rare earths as well.

  • HH-

Imagine a US that did not have bases throughout the world, the only weapons needed would be within our borders, or on ships. (and not easily targeted carriers). This describes most countryies' militarys. Maybe not feasible in today's world, but just think of the ramifications.

  • Hello? The concept is to have a supply of Rare Earth Elements so that IF we need the material for our weapons or industrial projects, the RE is there!
The demand for RE from the auto, aero and industrial sectors (to name a few), along with entities storing RE for speculation, (much like Gold), should send the material higher. The question is: What is the pure play (and verifiable production and storage) for RE?
There is a lot of guessing going on here!
MCP? SHZ? is there production yet from REE? Please advise, rare experts!

  • When it comes to government suggestions, it's ALWAYS about money.
I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the person(s) proposing this legislation just recently 'jumped on the boat' with investing in Rare Earths ... and this bill would ensure the investment is profitable.
