Nike (NKE) wins a guarantee from legislators in Oregon that the state will compute taxes on the company in the same method for the next 30 years even if state laws change. As part of the arrangement, Nike will invest at least $150M in the state and add 500 new jobs by 2016. In order to maneuver its way, Nike let other states dangle offers in front of it.

  • Amazing. Now one company or one individual in a state can negotiate future taxes for themselves for different tax rules than every other business or individual in the same state. Can't believe that the judicial system will allow this if any type of legal challenge is undertaken.

  • How is this new? Cities and states have been offering special tax incentives to corporations for years to keep them from leaving.

  • This just in - Nike employees will also be joining the state's health care system which covers the rare puckering injury. Their janitors will also be given immediate raises and bonuses to ensure they can continue to retain top talent.

  • Great now everybody else has to pay for Nike's share of the tax. Especially the SMB's. Guess this is an example of the problems we face in this country. Big play by different rules and everybody else will suffer.
