With soaring cotton prices bringing a renewed urgency for alternative fibers, Hanes (HBI) recently inked a deal with tiny Naturally Advanced Technologies (NADVF.OB +10.5%) to "commercialize" flax fiber. Called Crailar, the flax product could become another Lycra, says NAT's CEO.

A textile from flax fiber. Unless I am totally mistaken, and I spent many years in the fiber business, such textiles are called linen, which has been used in many places and civilizations. Cotton replaced it on a huge scale with the invention of the cotton gin. A new "Lycra", while linen is a wonderful natural fiber it is not an elastomer.
Then there is the agricultural question, who will grow it. But I'll leave that to any agriculturists who happen on this site.

I bought a flax-fibre pull-over a few years ago... it is insanely comfortable and durable.
