The protests and security force crackdowns continue in Syria, where 20K in Hams were fired at during an overnight sit-in. A government statement saying the demonstrations are the work of Salafist organizations, i.e. al-Qaeda, seemingly gives the green light for an even bloodier crackdown.

Yet, Hillary says Assad is a reformer. This is reminiscent of Obama's strategy with Iran back in 2009 when Iran was awash with protests. Obama purposely didn't support the protestors hoping he might improve relations with Iran and thus talk them out of arming themselves with nuclear weapons. Yeah, that went well.
Now the Obama administration is hoping to improve Syrian relations so that they might talk Assad out of his associations with both Hezbollah and Iran. Under Obama we've installed the first ambassador to Syria. The end result was the return of the first U.S. ambassador to Damascus since the assassination of Hariri in Lebanon. Visits from Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry were all part of the same strategy to sweet talk Assad and make nice. Assad’s response? An even tighter and more ostentatious alliance with Hezbollah and Iran and now calls to shoot protestors on sight.
