2012 was a big year for mobile game development and game studio layoffs, observes VentureBeat's Dean Takahashi in a year-end recap. 42% of gaming startups are now focused on mobile, as soaring user activity attracts developers in spite of the business model challenges. 2012 also saw social casino game use take off, something that could bode well for Zynga's (ZNGA) online gambling efforts, and witnessed multiplayer online games such as World of Warcraft and Star Wars: The Old Republic adopt free-to-play models.
