More on the 56% rebound in iron ore prices: The news is particularly good for high-cost producers like Cliffs Natural Resources (CLF). Oracle Research's Larry Balter estimates the company earns another $2/share for every $10/ton increase in the price of ore (it's up about $50/ton in Q4). The company earned $6.52/share in the year ended Sept. 30. (h/t Adam Johnson)

The price is up because Goldman has figured out a way to create a shortage.

No matter why, CLF is a BUY right here (as a stock trade). I'm long in-the-money call options and like where this story is heading. As China gets better, CLF (and others) get much more attractive.

I think that China's better than expected economy is mostly responsible. But I think Copper is the better investment going forward.

SCCO has the most reserves and the lowest cost of production - long term a winning position. Throw in the fact they seem to have handled the change in government in Peru rather well and there should be a good stretch the next few years for shareholders.

What is the future of CLF for 2013?

As I said above, this is a stock that really trades directly with how China is doing. I think $50 a share is easily possible. However, that said, it's hard for me to recommend a stock that is up 8% just today alone. Waiting for some pullback might be prudent. However, in my opinion if China continues to improve, stocks like CLF and CAT should move higher.
