I live in Vietnam (Hoi An) and am hoping this will be the first of a fan of their coffee and as a shareholder :>) However, it will be interesting. The GoV have generally resisted major chains coming in, protecting their national state brand (Trung Nguyen) and a national chain of "western model" coffee shops (Highland coffee). The former does not really do espresso/latte type drinks, more the classic Vietnamese drip style. The latter does the Starbucks-like drinks, and in fact was started a decade ago by an overseas VN who "borrowed" from the Starbucks menu/style. But in both brands, the coffee is generally disappointing and the experience is hit and miss. Not just foreigners but more and more VN, especially in Saigon, are developing a taste for Western-style espressos, and more independent shops are popping up, with the proper equipment and good coffee etc. It should be very interesting....could go either way. One thing is for sure, VN LOVE coffee and so if Starbucks has a successful launch it could be the tip of the iceberg. Just need to look at a place like Bangkok or Manila to see how popular Starbucks can become in newly-emerging Asian economies.
