FX markets yawn as Treasury Sec. Geithner defends the greenback, saying "we will never embrace a strategy to weaken the dollar ... our policy has been and will always be, as long as I will be in office, that a strong dollar is in the interest of the country."

So what, if any, tools does the treasury secretary have to "defend" the dollar?

The idea that the US Treasury and NOT the Fed deals with the value of the dollar is based on plain ignorance repeated over decades.

Geithner's opinion on this matter is irrelevant.

"FX markets yawn..." I think laughing would have been a more appropriate response.

Unfortunately, one guy with six accounts doesn't think Geithner is funny.

As long as he is in office the dollar will never be strong. What was his strategy when he didn't pay his income taxes.

Amazing statement actually..he knows he is going to be quoted on this statement...but he also knows he is sitting in front of a lot of educated people that can see he is lying....so he had a choice..he took the lie...and the soundbite...wow..what a MAN

This is just a bald-faced lie! Anybody that knows anything about economics could tell you that increasing the supply of dollars faster than real economic growth is going to lower their value!

Geithner is either a liar or utterly incompetent. I'm not sure which and frankly, I don't particularly care. Neither one is a quality that you want in a leader.

    $52 trillion short position ..

stop printing money and let deflation takes its course.

dollars would be in great demand.

savers would be rewarded, debtors/speculators ruined.

"We will never embrace a strategy to weaken the dollar."

Technically speaking he's probably correct. The US has been functioning on private sector issued frns while tim's mints have been issuing dollars that have been functioning perfectly well, though their stamped values are somewhat misleading.

Now, if only he would quit paying tribute on debt induced instruments and commence issuing US "greenbacks" to displace the fed's ether backed ciphers and scrip, we may see a sound ballast and appropriate sails rigged to the ship of state.

So now comments that call Geithner a liar and those that reply to it and point out his policies only benefit the bureaucracy and the moneyed elite are deleted???

Boy, perhaps there will be a knock at my door this evening and Ghadaffi's men.... er I mean the FBI will be wanting to "speak" with me!!!
