Dell's (DELL) executive defections continue. David Johnson, the IT giant's SVP of corporate strategy, is leaving to take a senior position at Blackstone. Dell lost its services chief and storage chief last month - in each case, the company said the exec is pursuing a new opportunity. There's a good chance a lot of Dell stock options are expiring out of the money these days.

I worked at Dell back in 1998, State and Local Government Sales... Every quarter I blew my quota out of the water and took home some nice bonuses. Consequently, my quotas got raised every quarter, this was not unique to me, same would happen to everyone who exceeded their quota. The other sales people in my group sucked. Most came from Home and Small Business Sales and/or were strait out of college and were nothing more than order takers, they were terrible sales people. To boot, these were the same worthless pin heads getting promoted into management; the blind leading the blind. Anyone worth their weight in salt, like me, left as soon as they figured out their max earnings potential.

Their biggest problem: Turnover, it’s horrendous there; it always has been and always will be. Reason: To this day, they continue to run with as little staff as they can get away with, resulting in everyone having to work 11-13 hour days. This burns people out, quickly, resulting in high turnover and loss of talent.

And all of this is still going on. Compensation is managed via quotas, which are totally unachievable. Which in turn leads to turnover and lack of motivation and low morale for those left to do the work.
