Goldman Sachs report on Philip Morris (PM +2%) that backed up its upgraded rating to Buy contains some insight on what the next big development for the company could be down the road. A new product with a target launch of 2016 mimics the experience of smoking without the harmful effects. Though it's been tried before, Philip Morris might take the "next-generation product" to the next level by catering it for the gigantic Chinese market.

  • Bank director for 25 years---Mutual fund trustee for 22 years with over 20B in assets under management. Am now retired. The potential for Phillip Morris is without a doubt in my mind, amoung the best in the S&P for many years to come. The water vaper nicotine product might very well revoulotionize this industry.

  • Either way, I bet millions of Chinese have something in their hand made by PM in 2016.

Upgrade by GS analyst today and div paid to shareholders and you get a recipe for a move back up.

$89 will look like a deal when it hits $100-105.

  • I inherited a boatload of tobacco products from my Dear Father when he passed away in September 2008. Prior to that I had always planned to sell them - out of fear of the tobacco industry - litigation and all that - yet when I got the shares os UVV, PM & MO I decided to sit pat since he left them for me to live on. Now, years later, I am glad I did. And the comments of knowledgeable folks like ws1936, Mr Arthur Bishop and the others here add a measure of comfort to someone like me who is not in the same league. Thank you for sharing your valuable opinions and posting them here. They have a special meaning to those who are not professionals.

  • Hi Bentley,

Would suggest you switch out of UVV. If you want to stay in US tobacco with the proceeds Lorillard is a much better investment. Alternatively just add the proceeds to PM. Otherwise your father certainly picked some good'uns to hand down to you!

  • A great sadness is apon me as I must admit there will probably be no serious pull back in PM to afford a better buy-op.More's the pity.Arthur I agree.89 will look like a fire sale price before this year is done. Rom

  • If the House Republicans screw around with the debt-ceiling I'm sure there will be a serious pull back in PM (as well as nearly everything else).
