IMF director general Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been arrested in New York minutes before leaving on a flight for France, and is accused of a sexual attack on a hotel maid in NYC. Strauss-Kahn is expected to be a candidate for president of France in 2012. Update at 11:15 PM: NYPD says it's anticipated he'll be charged with "a criminal sexual act, attempted rape, and unlawful imprisonment" within the hour.

Doubt they'll get far - he has diplomatic immunity.

    Depends on your perspective.

The maid who has no education or prospects and now barely gets by earning 10 bucks an hour is about to become a wealthy lady.

He's fucked in many ways, either way. I am not going to portend that I know what the political implications are of this alleged tryst/ assault, but i'm sure someone stands to benefit, and others to lose. I hope he has his coming to him here if he's an animal.

    ScrewLoose,

What makes you think he has diplomatic immunity?

NYPD is very aware of diplomatic status as they host the UN. So I do think they would be aware of his status as a diplomat.

This is bizarre to say the least. I don't think all the facts have been presented. I do think it might end up being an excellent plot for a novel....

NYPD still issues parking tickets on diplomat cars daily, they apply the law it isn't their job to prosecute....

I'm sure when they realized who he was they found it interesting but it's up to the legal system to determine if diplomatic immunity applies and even if it does he still gets expelled from the US and can't continue as head of IMF.

That was my interpretation of this document. See section 1(vii) and section 13.

Is anyone really surprised? This is typical of the global oligarchy, and why the world is in the state it's in. It's about perceived priveledge of the few "untouchables".

How will this effect the bailouts? He won't be around for meetings next week sitting in a jail cell.

There is no doubt more to this than meets the eye. For the NYPD to respond so quickly that they drag the head of the IMF out of first class at JFK on the claims of a lowly hotel maid seems hard to believe.

We've got the US going over the debt ceiling with the IMF becoming increasingly critical of the US fiscal policy; hugely important meeting on the bailouts, with Germany pushing for the IMF to take a more lead role in order to save the CDU FDP coalition; DSK being the lead rival to Sarkozy, etc.

In some part, this is down to the stupidity of DSK and he's clearly done something, hence the panicked exit minus mobile phone, but there is an element of honey trap here.

The one thing the wife and I cannot understand his how you can "force" someone to perform oral sex in this situation?

Yes; given the capabilities of the names that DSK would have on speed-dial, it is slightly surprising that the incident wasn't hushed-up by the hotel and quietly "settled" - without police involvement.

Can you imagine what the IMF's account is worth to a top hotel?

He's pro bailouts, soft on China, and hates Sarkozy.

So there are plenty of people who want to ruin him.

Besides, he has repeatedly shown that he can't control his penis. He f***** his secretary as recently as 2008.

He did this deliberately to help his campaign. He's obviously over the hill in the libido department, and the French admire sexual predators. So he staged this to boost himself in the French polls.

No body is above the law in America. This old man probably thought she was a French maid.

Previously he had an affair with Piroska Nagy and also had been accused of aggressively seeking sexual gratification in 2002 by a French journalist and writer, Tristane Banon.

Per the NY Times, he was not handcuffed during the apprehension. Not a serious enough crime ? Not a threat ? Go commit a crime in Paris and see how jacked up you get...what a joke.

Mr. Strauss-Kahn was trying to exercise an ancient French privilege known as the "droit de seigneur." Even today, such practices are "winked at" IN FRANCE.

Unfortunately for him, he picked the wrong country (a former colony) to try to exercise that privilege.
