Chatter suggests Microsoft (MSFT -1.5%) could begin negotiations to purchase Nokia's (NOK +1%) mobile phone unit with the goal of closing a deal by year's end. StreetInsider.com considers a deal "a stretch," since Nokia's phone unit currently generates all of the company's profits and most of its sales. A Nokia executive denies the rumor.

  • No value in RIMM for MSFT, lots in Nokia, and MSFT has the money, it isn't as far fetched as it may seem I'd say.

MSFT would likely lose interest from HTC/Samsung etc for its mobile platform but it may not matter considering Nokia's not insignificant size.

  • MSFT and NOK do not fit together. Microsoft should concentrate more on cloud computing.
