Comcast (CMCSA +0.5%) will soon begin testing a new way to deliver its television channels: via internet protocol. The move could eventually enable the cable provider to deliver video service to any customer with an internet connection, regardless of whether they live in an area covered by Comcast's cable system.

This should increase competition nationally. Where I live, we have two cable companies, but they only overlap in a small portion of the city. Once this technology expands to other cable providers, this could drop prices significantly. Additionally, would they then be able to offer ala carte pricing on channels? I know I only watch a small subset of the channels offered.

Boy, wouldn't that be great. I'm tired of paying for 250 channels to get the 20 that have all I need or am interested in. Of course that would be a big minus for the cable companies.

agreed about time, i'm shocked to see that they've invested in technology that will bring to an end the monopolistic set up we are currently under. let the price wars begin!

Thank God. Finally. About time. Why has this not happened sooner? Hope it rolls out sooner than later. I won't bother to hope it catches on, because I think it's a no-brainer. Just another way that other parts of the developed world have been ahead of us.
