The Obama administration is intensifying a crackdown on employers of illegal immigrants, notifying another 1,000 companies the government plans to inspect their hiring records. Wednesday's surge in "silent raids" brought to 2,338 the number of companies audited by ICE in the current fiscal year, topping last year's record of 2,196.

  • I think it's already assumed that Obama is anti-business. Chicago politics being what they are and Obama being the community organizer that he is, big business has always been the enemy.

  • While I commend the administration for going after these illegal practices, if the border is left porous as the administration wants, then what are all these illegals going to do? End up on the welfare rolls or in prison. States are not allowed to exert control and are punished if they attempt to do so. It's become a revolving door that encourages criminal activity, as this ever growing element, both on the street and in prison, learns how to defeat our laws.

  • yeah, great. the service we get now from people who actually want service sector jobs is fair at best. now we're going to kick them out to be replaced by the don't both me i'm tweeting and updating my facebook generation?

might as well start plowing over the strip malls now. oh wait, can't do that because most of those workers aren't legal either.

  • More and more I am moving from the "kick 'em all out" position where I was 3 years ago to the "kick the slacker American narcissists tweet generation out and give all the illegals citizenship" position.

I am betting that none of those immigrants got trophies and awards just for showing up, and were not praised by their parents for failing, nor get breast implants for graduation... www.narcissismepidemic...

  • We need to hire more government workers, right? All this work needs adding people in federal payroll. And that will boost our economy.

  • No kidding, and I am seeing it all over, in little ways that I would not noticed if it were not getting more pervasive. Just in the past couple of months: (1) Tacos at Taco Bell - they forgot the tomatoes. How in hell can you forget tomatoes for a taco? (2) Burger King - brown tinged lettuce in the salad (3) KFC - counter girl had to ask another worker which was the cole slaw - uhm.. duh, cole slaw is the green stuff.

The one common thing in those is that they were all Caucasion, probably recent college grads too :D

  • That is all Management and Ownership at fault there. It is not an issue of illegal worker vs. lazy American, if the managers step up and take personal responsibility for providing quality. Unfortunately, this is the case at every level here lately. Managers in the white collar world do the same, offshore as much as possible and pass the blame offshore when things go wrong. We need to take back our country and parents who won't kick their kids out of the basement and away from the Nintendo are at fault 100%.

  • More important than food service is food production. Those tweeting on their ipads will be great working in the fields of California, Oregon, Washington etc.
The costs of adding illegals to the government dole will be huge, however, we have little choice. We need to go back to the days when we just pretended they were not here at all. But the crime and other government costs associated with having them here is the result of years of abusing them to the point where they skip out of their "paying jobs" and move into the drug trade and other criminal activities or taking government relief. We have created a generation of citizens (including many illegals) who are no longer capable of contributing to the wealth of our nation.

  • The problem with your argument is that there are a lot more Americans on the dole than there are illegals. As far as drug trade, check out who makes most of the Meth.

  • I guess I did not make myself clear. The argument made by those who want to tighten the borders and stop government handouts to illegals is that they are a drain on the system and behind much of the crime. I am saying that to the extent that is true it is the result of abusing them to the point where they lose interest in paying jobs. My view is that without illegals our country would be less productive. The average american without a job would not last a day in most of the jobs the illegals work.

Again. We have created a generation of citizens and illegals who are no longer capable or desire to contribute to the wealth of our nation.

  • I would mostly agree with that, but I think there is also a lot of posturing on all sides here. Eventually something will have to be done to at least make most of those illegals at least semi-legal. There is no possible way it would be even physically possible to track down the estimated 11 million and kick them out.

But both sides are so caught up in making policitcal points that the immigration issue has become a giant political football, where nothing can get done. We currently have no effective leadership in any party, so until then crops will rot in the field and the Millenials will continue to tweet about how rough it is living in their parents home, and wonder why noone is beating down the door to hire them.

  • Led by who? Holder, again? Another example of the constant anti-business agenda of this Adm. I was 'almost' amused when Obama blamed the job problem on businesses using ATMs and "kiosks" instead of real workers. Never mind accuracy and 24-hour availability. ATMs and kiosks would be...ummm...."innovation" wouldn't they? So much for rhetoric.

  • Plumber I know who used to work on large government projects in NYC (like Fed Reserve and WTC) told me a story about how there have been some recent roundups of subcontractors using illegals. I told him I felt bad for the illegals, he said the contractors were likely going to be fined something significant.

Then he told me how these companies charge out say $25/hour for their workers, and have some kind check cashing gig going on, where the checks show $25/hr but since these guys can't cash them the contractors do and effectively pay them $15/hr as a result. Something weird and roundabout like that, didn't pay too much attention, what I found interesting was that these were jobs on gov't properties or large institutions.

  • Well, this sends a big message: don't hire anyone with an accent or dark skin as that will be an invitation for the government to rush in to fine you. Even if they have documentation, don't hire because it may be phony. Ah, what tangled webs we weave. Head to Puerto Rico to beef up the Hispanic vote and then make it more difficult to get a job.

  • I think what most reasonable people are saying is that neither party has any real plan. All the fuss about Arizona a while back was nothing but a smokescreen and blatant leftist demagoguing. Just like all the crap about illegals taking American jobs that comes from the right is the same.

You need to get off of your partisan horse and realize that ALL POLITICIANS ARE LIARS, no matter if they ride a donkey or an elephant. Most of them realize that if they fixed the problem, they would need something else to hang around the other party's neck.

  • We have plenty of fourth, fifth and sixth generation Texans with Hispanic backgrounds (my Anglo wife has a Hispanic great grandmother). My point is this targeting of the employers by the administration will result in unwarranted and unnecessary stealth discrimination by employers. Better safe than sorry (I mean fined).
