French manufacturing PMI falls to 42.9 in January (in line with flash) from 44.6 in December, dragged lower by all five components, with new orders slumping at the sharpest rate in almost four years. "Confidence seems to have evaporated in the face of an increasingly uncertain economic environment, leading manufacturers to make sharper cuts to employment, purchasing and input stocks," says Markit.
