Shares of Pitney Bowes (PBI +3.3%) move higher after sorting out the news from the USPS that Saturday mail delivery was being curtailed. According to the USPS, the move to Monday through Friday service will only affect street addresses, and packages will continue to be delivered six days per week, as will mail addressed to PO Boxes. Additonally, Post Offices currently open on Saturdays will remain open.

This is a stupid plan. If they want to eliminate one day of mail delivery per week, why not eliminate Mondays? There are already six Mondays a year when there is no mail delivery because of Monday holidays. If Saturday delivery is eliminated, there will be at least six times a year when there are four days between mail deliveries. And it could be more if any holidays fall on a Friday. If package deliveries and post office operations are continued on Saturdays, how much are the real savings. None of those occur on Monday holidays anyhow, so the savings would be greater by eliminating Monday deliveries.

Even more ridiculous is that there isn't even a real problem. The USPS had nearly 800 million in positive operating cash flow in Q4. The whole problem is accounting BS where they are expected to recognize gigantic future obligations right now.

Very thought out. I could live without Monday deliveries. Most of my mail is junk. And the mail I do get is never time sensitive. And it's a bother to empty out my mailbox everyday.

How about removing Monday and Saturday deliveries?
