President Obama is expected to talk about jobs, defense, energy, immigration, gun control and the housing recovery in his State of the Union speech tonight, although the focus for the markets will be on the automatic spending cuts on March 1. If the president "grandstands about the size of government and taxes," the reception will be poor, says strategist Larry McDonald. If Obama extends a meaningful olive branch, "that's going to be good."

Of course he will get a poor reception because nearly half the senate and more than half the house are republicans who hate him. And they would rather disagree than work toward solving problems.

AP is reporting that "sources close to sources (OK, we just make things up) but reliable sources (our own reporters) note that President Obama is going to start out his second term '...with a bang. He's promising to "rebuild America" and he's calling on the best economic minds in the country for a "Jobs Summit" in April.'"

The Senate hasn't made a budget (as in the one the constitution says it must) in 4 years. Why should he worry about that now?
