Office Depot (ODP) and OfficeMax (OMX) are in talks to merge, according to The Wall Street Journal. If a deal gets hashed out, synergies for the combination of the two office supply retailers could be as high as $700M, which is over a third of their combined market cap.

About time for these two limping dinosaurs.

The 25-year 'Go-Go' history for ODP is over, signaling the permanent end of that riding of the housing bubble.

My read is that 2013 will be a M&A bloom year where consolidation is the name and only game in town. Look at the AMR and US Airway deal too.

It will never work. Their names are too different. Even their stock symbols are widely inconsistent.

Who will be the acquirer in this deal? ODP has a higher market cap, but not by much.

Look for massive M&A of the 'Second-Tier' defense contractors this year now. Lots of great buying opportunities and money to be made here.
