Just days before the start of its civil trial over the 2010 Gulf of Mexico spill, BP says the U.S. Department of Justice has backed its claim that oil it recovered at the spill site should be excluded from penalties it could face. It believes the government's estimate overstates the amount spilled by at least 20% and includes 810K barrels of oil BP captured from the leaking well. BP -1.2% premarket.
