The deadly attack on the Algerian natural gas plant partly owned by BP has revived fears over the safety of oil industry operations in remote corners of the Mideast and Africa. But from 1999-2012, BP's deadliest operating locations were retail fuel stations in the U.S., mostly involving gun crime, often robberies or disputes that ended up with a fatality.

I don;t think BP loses much money on petty crime in the USA. Oil and gas companies in the Middle East need to have private armies to guard all their facilities, and do. They have to judge the cost benefit on an ongoing basis. I would hope they dont pay protection to terrorists.

@ rowagn, you call 'robberies or disputes that ended up with a fatality' petty crime? Never mind the rest of you wishful thinking.

Out of context. Five thousand separate entities vs. a dozen? One is political and the others are mostly criminals looking for an easy buck. About like comparing shoplifting to war.

@ghss44 some loss of life is less important than others? It is obvious to the reader of the article where there is loss of life.

I have been held up while working in a service station, so am quite aware of the dangers that exist when working in service stations. I didn't like the comparison of individual incidents to the horrendous attack on the natural gas plant. I guess you do. I misused the word petty. I should have said individual homicides and attacks. I agree with @ghss44.
