PepsiCo (PEP) lost ground in Thailand after its partner of 59 years in the region launched its own soft drinks in November, effectively cutting off the company's distribution network. The new brands from Thai Beverage grabbed 19% of the nation's market share in just two months. The bigger issue: Do Pepsico and Coca-Cola face the threat of local brands knocking their drinks off local shelves with manufacturing, marketing, and technology improved across Asia?

  • Do you want to pay $1.78 for 2liter bottle of PEP or KO; when you can get the generic version for $.75? I switched to water because none is good for you.

  • The threat they face is the realization that their product causes health issues.

Water, and wine is all that should be consumed

  • (PEP) owns Aquafina. (KO) owns Dasani and Vitamin Water.

  • Yes, not least because these local brands are invariably more suited to local tastes, which Coke and Pepsi embrace somewhat reluctantly. The strength of both still lies in core portfolio, about which they remain fundamentalists. If Coke is a religion think of its evangelism being of a Dominican rather than a Jesuit strain. The Jesuits were the warriors, but they often "went native". The Dominicans stuck to the rule - and supplied the staff for The Spanish Inquisition!

  • PEP's strong point is, and will remain, it's snacks. I have owned it many years, it just keeps on working.
    Personally, I drink tap water.

  • (KO) has outperformed (PEP) over the last 5 years.
But in the long run, they are equal.

  • Should you own both or is one all you need? I own PEP and I'm waiting for a pull back on KO

  • One might be fine. I think (PEP) has more room to grow. Just remember (PEP) is more a snack business, while (KO) is a pure drink play.
