Merck (MRK) intends to slash 13,000 jobs, or about 14% of its workers, in its restructuring program. This adds to the 17,000 cuts already planned and would reduce spending by an extra $1.3B by 2015. Drug firms have been firing staff and closing plants ahead of the loss of patent protection on blockbuster medicines.
