EMC's Greenplum unit adds to its big data product arsenal by launching a home-grown version of the Hadoop software framework, widely used in big data projects. The product, called Pivotal HD, competes with offerings from fast-growing startup Cloudera. EMC argues Pivotal HD is differentiated by its scalability, response times, and ability to integrate with business intelligence apps and Greenplum's database software. Greenplum is one of the businesses comprising EMC and VMware's (VMW) Pivotal Initiative.
