The IT world's "bring your own device" trend has received plenty of attention; less has been given to the "bring your own app" trend, in which employees take the initiative to leverage cloud business apps. Platforms such as Salesforce's (CRM) Force.com and Amazon's (AMZN) EC2 will benefit by providing the infrastructure for many of these apps.

  • I would take EC2 over Force.com. Amazon offers a much more robust set of options than salesforce.com right now. Its an enhanced form of web hosting with a service API tier on top. The "cloud" adoption will suffer from security concerns for many companies and individuals for at least the next 12-18 months, which probably delays mass consumption.
