The Canadian government is one-upping the U.S. government's data consolidation efforts, announcing plans to close 93% of the data centers it runs. Moves like these show how much of an opportunity still exists for VMware (VMW) and Riverbed (RVBD) to profit from consolidation initiatives, given how their products often take center stage in them.

    I read the article. I still couldn't find out why Canada needs a data center.

     

    Still, in the spirit of austerity, any savings will be welcome.

    The question for me is, how could you have 93% more capacity than you really need today....oh, right....its the government of Canada. Regardless of technology change, that much more capacity is a managment failure.
