Box office tracking shows Disney (DIS) movie Oz The Great And Powerful is on pace to earn $80M or more for its opening weekend which would be the best start for a film in 2013. Quite a bit is at stake with the release after the company's studio reportedly sunk $350M to product and market the movie and following the $200M loss on John Carter which dented the studio's reputation for producing profits.

Disney did not lose $200M on John Carter. That was the projected loss after the first week in release.

Movies/movie expenses make up about 7% of Disney's budget. Is this really that "huge" of a deal?

Whoops- looks like the wrong information made it into the market current.

Honestly I never heard of John Carter before the movie, and I thought it was a pretty good sci fi flick..

I agree with you, the John Carter movie was pretty good. Does anyone know if Disney plans on doing a John Carter squeal? There's more than enough material from the books to turn it into a trilogy.

I actually watched it last night on Starz or HBO something... it was entertaining the 2nd time around. I would see a sequel although I haven't heard of any in production.

There's going to be a Twitter campaign this Saturday, May 9 (the on-year anniversary of the film's release), to try to show Disney the fan support and waiting revenue for a John carter sequel. The goal is to get on Twitter starting at 10 a.m. Eastern Time on Saturday and use #JohnCarterSequel and #JohnCarter to keep making comments, respond to comments and re-tweet for a little over 2 hours. The idea is to do this while watching the movie, if you have it or can otherwise get it (it's available for sale--including instant download--from Amazon and on demand from Verizon FIOS and Starz).

The last two Disney articles/currents both had incorrect John Carter information.

It takes less than a second to google/bing it and find the correct information.

At the very least, I would like SA to correct the incorrect data.

Bottom line is: If the success or failure of John Carter affects your Disney stock purchase, you don't know Disney.
