As shipments of hybrid and electric cars take off, so will sales of lithium-ion batteries: IHS expects industry revenues to grow from $11.8B in 2010 to $31.4B in 2015, and $53.7B in 2020. A123 Systems (AONE), Ener1 (HEV), and China's BYD (BYDDF.PK - previously) are some of the names developing lithium-ion batteries for cars.

Interesting numbers. This throws some light on the fact that the value of deals like AONE's recent agreement with GM depend a lot on whether or not the contract concerned is for a pure EV or PHEV. AONE's deal appears to be related to a pure battery EV model - not to a future version of the Volt and not to another intended PHEV model. Some updated thoughts here -

Range anxiety seems likely to push consumers who are interested in electric vehicles of some description towards PHEVs in the initial stages. Pure EVs seem to be more of a niche market, though still likely to generate enough demand to provide a player like Tesla with a reasonable platform.
