Shire (SHPG +0.3% in London) has acquired closely held Swedish company Premacure, which is developing a protein replacement therapy for the prevention of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a rare eye disorder that primarily affects premature babies and is one of the most common causes of blindness in childhood. The treatment is in Phase II trials. Shire made an upfront payment and will pay royalties. (PR)
