After years of operating independently, collaboration between Jony Ive's design team and Apple's (AAPL) "human interface" team (led by Greg Christie) has been growing, the WSJ reports. It probably doesn't hurt Ive was put in charge of both groups last fall, following Scott Forstall's departure. The paper adds Ive wants the next version of iOS to have "a more 'flat design' that is starker and simpler;" this dovetails with expectations Ive would push for Apple to abandon skeuomorphic software/UI design.

Skeuomorphics saved my life more than once when I was a pilot.

I can see that a pure engineer would look down on this, but it does serve a purpose for ordinary mortals.

Now all we need is for Apple to announce a big dividend hike after the close tomorrow.

I like the idea of a more clean look, but I'm a bit concerned the loss of skeuomorphic design may make the look appear less inviting and friendly to the 10–16 yr. olds. They are clearly a very important part of the market. That said it is hard not to let Ive do it his way – he's proved he's in touch with what people like. Hopefully that talent will extend to the look of software.

All for the shift. I've always felt that textured design is a bit of a cop-out. It's easy to do, it looks good and maintains a subtle clean feel. And as @Camden pointed out, it is friendly and engaging on the surface. However, the method is dated. The same digitized textures (wood, metal) give OSX and iOS a very 2000s feel and if you look at often enough, you can see why there needs to be a revamp to something more sleek and focused.

I don't see that Skeuomorphics are used very much on the iPhone or iPad. iBooks, iPhoto, Newstand, and Contacts on the iPad use it but I haven't found many more places. It does lead to some inconsistencies between apps. I would like to see all apps be a bit more standardized, especially where the buttons are placed. Put the trash can and Done button in the same place in all apps. Little things like that make the product a bit smoother to use.

I doubt they will jettison skeumorphism completely...

I sort of miss the reel-to-reel thingy, one of the few redeeming features of that lame podcast app.
