"Wintel schmintel," Josh Brown scoffs - value investor favorites Microsoft (MSFT) and Intel (INTC) are cheap for good reason. These stocks are simply dead money, he says, because they are PC companies at heart - and dominating "an industry in permanent decline has never been a rewarding scenario." (also)

With the decline of RIMM there is a huge opportunity for MSFT to fill the void that leaves the enterprise user without a device that is properly integrated. No matter how successful iPhone is I still see middle management clinging to their clunky blackberries.

If Windows 8 is a hit, which even techie bloggers are saying it is, I say MSFT gets a big boost. They may even refresh the PC's they've been getting away with that run XP. So I'll be able to go into a meeting and use Office 365 on a tablet that is integrated with my desk PC and my Windows phone? Hmmmm...

As a 20-something year old, I love to read about older people's (usually dire) forecasts for the personal computer....if you don't know how to use a PC well, then maybe an iPad will do for you. Otherwise, you'll always need some kind of PC. And the cloud? Internet infrastructure in the US needs about another 20 years before it's at a stage where the cloud dream-world can even become reality as people realize that internet connectivity is currently far too little for anyone to rely on the cloud.

Read the interview with the CEO of EMC in the latest Forbes issue. EMC basically is the cloud and he says the Intel x86 chip runs the entire backbone of the internet. Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Amazon all depend on Intel's x86 chip for their critical infrastructure.

If I could give you one stock that is a play on all those names, you would take it...that stock is Intel.

micah, i think you nailed it. permanent decline? chip makers will be needed as long as people want to get online. figure out what intel goes into and it's pretty hard not to get interested in a stock growing dividends and already yielding 4 percent.
